About Bargaining
For the first time in eight years, New School part-time faculty have the opportunity to collectively bargain a new contract and improve our working conditions.
Through collective bargaining, part-time faculty are asking the university for a dramatically updated and expanded contract that includes, among other things:
Pay that truly reflects the amount of work we perform outside of the classroom
Job security for new and long-term faculty alike
Healthcare that is accessible, reliable, and affordable
Curricular input for a real say over our departments’ offerings
Open bargaining for a democratic contract
Open bargaining is a democratic union process in which collective bargaining is conducted transparently, with meetings open and information available to all members. For the first time since the union’s formation almost 20 years ago, part-time faculty are fully committed to open bargaining, ensuring that we can all participate in shaping our new contract.
Open bargaining is a powerful strategy. It strengthens us as a collective of educators striving to create the best possible learning environments for our students. Without solidarity, we have nothing.
Meet your elected bargaining committee
In February 2022, part-time faculty membership elected a bargaining committee of 20 part-time faculty union members. While continuously engaging members through surveys, one-on-one conversations, town halls, and open meetings to understand the most pressing concerns of part-time faculty, the bargaining committee has been working tirelessly to develop and negotiate a strong new contract that will benefit all members.
